is a delinquent outcast and member of a gang. Sakuragi, being
very unpopular with girls, has been rejected by them 50 times.
In his first year at Shohoku High School, he finds out that
Haruko Akagi is the girl of his dreams, and is happy when she
is not scared of him like all the other girls he has asked
out.
Haruko Akagi, who recognizes Sakuragi's athleticism,
introduces him to the Shohoku basketball team. Sakuragi was
reluctant to join the team at first because he had no previous
background in any sports and thought that basketball was a
game for losers (also because the 50th girl rejected him for
a basketball player).
Sakuragi, despite his immaturity and hot temper, proves to be
a natural athlete with potential and joins the team in order
to impress Haruko and prove that he is worthy of her.
Later on, Sakuragi realizes that his love for the sport equals
that of his crush on Haruko. Kaede Rukawa, Sakuragi's bitter
rival (both on the basketball court and love, even when Rukawa
doesn't acknowledge Haruko's crush on him), the star rookie
and a " Girl magnet" joins the team at the same time.
Hisashi Mitsui, an ex-junior high school MVP, and Ryota
Miyagi, a short but fast player, both also rejoin the team
and together these four struggle to complete team captain
Takenori Akagi's dream of making Shohoku the national
champion.
Together, these misfits gain publicity and the once little
known Shohoku basketball team becomes an all-star contender
in Japan.

+ Kaede Rukawa [Shohoku High School]***^^**
Kaede Rukawa is the Small Forward of the Shohoku team, and
Hanamichi Sakuragi's rival as well as his opposite; attractive
to girls, skilled at basketball, and very cold and aloof,
mostly unfeeling.
In the series, he is rarely seen with a smile on his face; the
only time he smiles is when he faced Eiji Sawakita, after he
figures out how to beat him to become the number one in Japan.
While he is completely the opposite of Sakuragi, he shares
some traits with Sakuragi in a sense that they are not
academically inclined and are good fighters.
Although he regards Sakuragi as an idiot and the two
frequently get into conflicts, he knows that Sakuragi can put
his talents to a better use.
Takenori Akagi's younger sister, Haruko, is in love with him,
though she does not confess it to him and he himself is
completely unaware of her feelings.
Rukawa's hobby is sleeping, and he is usually seen asleep
whenever he's not on the court, even falling asleep while
riding his bicycle.
Waking Rukawa from a nap is considered unforgivable, since he
will almost automatically beat up the culprit. He has also
been in his fair share of off-court fights, but can hold his
own.
Rukawa's goal is to be the best high school player in Japan,
and he considers Sendoh of Ryonan to be his greatest rival.
He is often referred to as the " Super-rookie" and the
" Ace of Shohoku".
Rukawa is extremely good at basketball, and possesses a wide
range of skills to complement his height, athleticism and
drive to win.
Despite being merely a first-year high school player, he is
the undisputed ace of Shohoku's team. In the Kanagawa
Interhigh Tournament, he was named one of the top five
players, the only first year player so honored.
He has changed the course of many games, such as when he
single-handedly brought Shohoku back from a double-digit
deficit against Kainan.
However, his style was criticized as being too selfish, and
he sometimes comes into conflict with his teammates for
various reasons.
This was one of the reasons why Mitsuyoshi Anzai refused to
give him his approval when Rukawa told him that he intended
to go to the United States, and told him to become the top-
ranking player in Japan.
Before he even thought of it. When he was outplayed by
Sawakita during the match against Sannoh though, he realized
that he had to change his style of play and pass the ball.
It was his pass that led to Sakuragi's buzzer-beating shot,
winning the match. Rukawa is later named a member of the
All-Japan basketball team.
+ Akira Sendoh [Ryonan High School]***^^**
Akira Sendoh is Ryonan's ace and power forward who is
considered one of the top players in Kanagawa. An easygoing
person, Sendoh usually has a smile on his face whether on-
court or off.
He can be lazy at times and has a reputation for arriving
late to practice sessions and matches. His tardiness is
tolerated though, because of his abilities.
One of his hobbies is fishing, and he has a taste for lemons.
His teammates trust him wholeheartedly, firmly believing that
he can lead Ryonan to victory even if they are trailing.
However he was outplayed by Eiji Sawakita back in junior high.
Sendoh's all-round skills are repeatedly displayed throughout
the series. He is capable of playing a one-on-one style of
play like Rukawa, but also understands how to utilize his
teammates effectively.
Against Kainan, Sendoh was deployed as a point guard to
match-up Maki, but transformed himself into a deadly scorer
when the game was on the line.
In the second match against Shohoku, he traded shots with
Rukawa. Sendoh succeeds Uozomi as captain after he and
Ikegami leave the team.
While he is easy going and humble, he is able to recognize the
talent of other players, and is really compassionate about the
game.
In some way, Sendoh also contributed Rukawa's growth as a
basketball player: Coach Anzai pointed out to Rukawa, that he
is below Sendoh, causing Rukawa to think about his playing
style.
During a 1 on 1 with Rukawa before the Nationals, Sendoh made
Rukawa realize that 1 on 1 is only one way of playing a game.
Reminded by the conversation Rukawa had with Sendoh, Rukawa
was able to change his playing style, which helped Shohoku to
beat Sannoh.
